WHAT YOU WILL NEED IN ORDER TO HAVE YOUR DOCUMENT NOTARIZED
1. Driver’s License, Senior State ID, Non Driver State ID, Passport from any Country with proper entry stamps –
(Very few other IDs are acceptable.) IDs must not have expired and temporary IDs are not acceptable.
2. Name printed in document or under signature line, must be the same or a shorter than name as appears on photo ID.
3. Document should be completely filled out, no blank spaces to be filled in later (except for the client’s signature, and Notarial section).
4. Signer must demonstrate that she or he understands the significance of the document she or he will sign, and sign of her or his free will.
5. Current notarial wording is available on The Secretary of State of CA’s web site. (Notary Public generally bring certificates with them, in case the wording is not included on the document to be signed, however, signers must tell the notary which certificate they need, the most common types are Acknowledgments and Jurats.)
6. Jurats MUST be signed in front of Notary Public; Acknowledgments may be signed in advance, but signer must appear before notary and acknowledge having signed.
7. Time – It takes about 7 minutes per client signature to prepare the Notarial wording and Notary journal entry.
8. Signers must sign and in most cases thumbprint the notarial journal.
9. Clarification of $15 fee for each client signature to be notarized. Rate limit is designated by the Secretary of State of CA. (Example: 1 person signs document 3 times, but only 1 signature needs to be notarized = $15)(Example: 3 people sign same document, all 3 signatures require notarization = 45$)
